Under stairs, she clutches
a shredded baby blanket
wrapped around her dolly.

Faces in quiet dialogue
are opals in the dim,
stained with expectation.

The front door
whines open,
crashes shut.

An adolescent girl
folds fetal
around her baby

as shoes pound
up the steps
of her spine.
